Town of Sahuarita Manager's Choice Employee Award

The Manager’s Choice Awards program is a town-wide employee recognition program that acknowledges superior performance by employees. All employees are eligible for the award – full-time, part-time, temporary and seasonal employees. Nominations for the award can come from any employee (an employee cannot nominate himself/herself), member of the community, or the Town Manager. Employees may receive multiple nominations but cannot receive more than one award per year and an employee may not receive an award for more than two consecutive years.

Employees who receive an award from separate departmental recognition programs are not precluded from being nominated for a Town-wide award. 

Nomination Process

1. Employees (or a team of employees) as well as members of the community can nominate any employee for recognition. The Town Manager may also choose to add employees into consideration for the award, however the nomination form does not need to be completed in this case.

2. Completed forms will be reviewed by the Town Manager. He/she may select any of the nominated individuals to receive special recognition during the semi-annual all staff meeting. The Town Manager may also choose not to give any awards in a given year.

3. Nomination forms may be submitted throughout the year to the Town Manager’s Office.

4. The nominator may be contacted by the Town Manager for clarifications or if there is missing information on the nomination form.

Categories & Criteria

Employees may be nominated for special achievement and superior performance in the following categories:

A. Safe Practices & Wellness
The employee continually goes beyond what is required for safely performing their work and ensuring others are safe, contributes to the fostering of a safe and/or healthy work environment, or consistently provides an example of safe work practices. The employee may also have created a solution which provided a valued benefit to the organization in terms of health, safety, or wellness. The efforts went beyond what is required for their normal job duties. Or, the employee showed dedication and perseverance and inspired others in achieving a significant personal fitness or wellness goal.

B. Customer Service
The employee provides consistent exemplary service to customers with an inspiring attitude and behavior that far exceeds the norm and inspires others to achieve excellence in customer service as well. The employee goes beyond the job requirements to satisfy customers and displays a professional and friendly image of the Town. The employee may have also solved a difficult customer-service based problem or found improvements for a Town customer service related function.

C. Special Accomplishments
Accomplishments include meritorious or creative achievements which are above and beyond the norm, including significant academic or professional achievements. An employee may also be awarded in this category for accomplishments that contributed to increased efficiency and/or quality of Town operations or resulted in significant savings or the generation of new revenue for the Town.

D. Heroism
The employee went above and beyond the call of duty when responding to an emergency that threatened life or property. All employees are eligible for this award. For Police Department heroic actions, the Police Chief will help determine if the action was above and beyond the call of duty.

E. Volunteerism
The employee’s volunteer activity and efforts have addressed specific community needs and have had a positive impact on important issues within the community. The employee has shown dedication to making a difference within the community though volunteer activity, coordination, fundraising, or contribution efforts.

F. Ingenuity
The employee has continually demonstrated imagination, resourcefulness, and/or immense initiative above what is required or expected in their job function. The employee may have reinvented their traditional role to creatively encompass more duties or provide better service, displayed inventiveness in building a new system or policy for increased Town efficiency or better service, or nurtured an environment of inspiration and thoughtfulness that allowed for a team or department to better function.

Award recipients will receive an inscribed plaque and a monetary award at the discretion of the Town Manager.

The Town Manager may award up to 6 employees with excellence awards each year. Only one award per category may be granted each year. The nominations will be reviewed for relevancy to the following five Focus Areas of the Strategic Plan 2016-2019: Economic Development, Infrastructure, Planning for Our Community's Future, Organizational Effectiveness and Quality of Life.

The award(s) will be presented at the December 2017 Minute with the Manager meeting. Nomination forms must be submitted to Teri Bankhead, in the Town Manager’s Office, no later than 5 p.m., November 1. Infrastructure

You may have noticed heavy-lifting cranes and large commercial buildings going up on Nogales Highway near Abrego Drive. "The Crossing at Sahuarita," a new shopping center, is currently underway.

Sprouts Farmers Market along with two junior anchors on either side (PetSmart and T.J. Maxx) are the first to go under construction. The exterior building is constructed of Concrete Tilt-Up Panels, the town’s first of its construction type since the building department was established in 2000.

The Tilt-Ups are one foot thick and vary in width from approximately 17 to 24 feet and stand tall at over 32 feet. They are poured on the ground and once the concrete sets they are lifted up and attached to the foundation.

Felipe Hernandez

Parks Maintenance Employee Honored


Parks maintenance employee, Felipe Hernandez was recently recognized by the Sahuarita Parks and Recreation Commission for his honorable service on behalf of the Town. Hernandez has been employed with Sahuarita Parks and Recreation since January of 2009. Since that time, his diligence, initiative and dedication have been outstanding. Hernandez recently assisted a park patron in finding a lost wedding ring on the Anamax Park premises. Parks maintenance foreman, Brian DeBreceny said that Hernandez's dependability has been especially notable, and Hernandez has often gone above and beyond what is expected. DeBreceny noted that Hernandez has been indispensable during a number of emergency situations that have arisen over the course of his employment with the Town.

Report Park and Road Issues to the Town: There's an App for That!

YourGov allows anyone with a smart device to report non-emergency, Town-owned park or road issues at the location of the issue or when able; it allows for anonymous or registered user reporting. 

The app allows a phone snapshot of the issue to be attached, along with as much typed in description as needed; with GPS on, shown as a blue circle on the map, the location coordinates are automatically added, or you can manually move the map around to the correct location. 

Once sent from your device, the issue is converted in near-real time to a work request, which automatically alerts appropriate Parks and Recreation or Public Works personnel of the new issue.  Alerted town staff will review, validate, prioritize, and then assign the work request to a town employee’s day-to-day workflow to fix the issue. Please note, for emergency and/or life threatening town infrastructure related issues, please call 911.

If a reported item is for an issue not maintained by the Town, Town personnel will report it to the appropriate agency.  If the reported item is outside town boundaries, it will not be sent to the town; instead, it will be sent to Cartegraph, who will attempt to notify the appropriate municipality.

Use of the app is simple. Create an issue by selecting the “+” (plus sign) on the app.  Satellite or normal map views are available to help pinpoint the issue; the issue being created is shown as a white circle with an orange outline. To move the issue circle location, touch the screen to relocate it, as needed. YourGov will show on the map any issues already reported that have not been completed as a white circle with a black outline; these can be reviewed to check if the new issue in question has already been reported. 

The website (PC) version of YourGov works similarly to the app version, with the exception of automatic GPS location of the issue, and likely touchscreen use. To choose the issue location, either type in a street address, or move/zoom/click to the location of the issue using a mouse.  The web version of YourGov can be accessed at https://yourgov.cartegraph.com/.  On Cartegraph’s website, http://www.cartegraph.com/solutions/yourgov, there is a short, generic video and other additional information about YourGov.
