Explorer Post 693

Exploere Post 693

Law Enforcement Exploring is a worksite-based program for young men and women who have completed the eighth grade and are 14 years of age, or are 15 years of age but have not yet reached their 21st birthday.

One of the Exploring programs from Learning for Life, a non-Scouting subsidiary of the Boy Scouts of America, Law Enforcement Explorer posts help youth to gain insight into a variety of programs that offer hands-on career activities. For young men and women who are interested in careers in the field of law enforcement, Exploring offers experiential learning with lots of fun-filled, hands-on activities that promote the growth and development of adolescent youth

The Sahuarita Police Department's Explorer Post 693 currently has 10 Explorers (those who have completed the Explorer Academy) and 6 Cadets (those who have not yet completed the Explorer Academy).

Anyone between the ages of 14 and 21 can join as an explorer or cadet. Those who are 13 years old may attend but are not eligible to attend an Explorer Academy or go on trips until the age of 14. Youth must be interviewed by Advisors, and not have an extensive criminal record. Police Explorer members participate in Town events, such as Fiesta Sahuarita or the State of the Town Address, as well as provide security and traffic control.

They are trained in all areas of Law Enforcement, from Community Policing to Firearms Training. They also participate in fundraisers such as Golf Tournaments and Car Washes.

Explorers are issued polo shirt and tactical pants as part of the uniforms. Other equipment is assigned as needed during the type of event they participate, this can include a duty belt, hand cuffs, dress, uniform, red gun, etc.

The Sahuarita Police Explorer Post 693 was started in May 2007. The post will continue to compete in National Competitions, local events, and tactical seminars across the state and country.

Explorers perform 100 hours of community service every fiscal year. In March 2008, we hosted our first Explorer Academy, which was attended by youth from the South Tucson Police Department, as well as our own. They were instructed in the areas of high risk stops, building searches, traffic accidents, etc. Although not mandatory, a majority of the youth were pepper sprayed at the end of the academy (with parent and doctor approval).
