CANDIDATE PACKETS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE TOWN CLERK'S OFFICE

Prospective candidates may make an appointment with the Town Clerk to review the candidate packet and discuss the election process. Informational appointments generally last 15 - 30 minutes. Please call (520) 822-8804 to make an appointment.

The nomination filing period begins at 8 AM, Monday, March 7, 2022, and ends at 5 PM, Monday, April 4, 2022.

TERMS

Four (4) Council Member seats will be filled during the 2022 election cycle.  Three (3) Council Members will be elected to 4-year terms and one (1) Council Member will be elected to a 2-year term.   Interested candidates may opt to run for a 4-year or a 2-year term, but not both.  Newly elected Council Members will assume the duties of office after the vote has been canvassed by the Town Council. Council Members are typically sworn in at the next regularly scheduled Town Council meeting following the November 8, 2022, General Election.

Candidate Eligibility

Residents interested in running for Sahuarita Town Council Member must be at least 18 years of age; a qualified elector at the time of filing their nomination paper; and have resided in Sahuarita for one year.

STATEMENT OF INTEREST

Before collecting any signatures on a candidate nomination petition, a candidate must declare their interest in running for office by filing a Statement of Interest form with the Town Clerk.  Petition signatures collected before the date the Statement of Interest is filed are invalid and may be subject to challenge.

Nomination Petition SIGNATURE REQUIREMENTS

Candidate nomination petitions must contain a minimum of 271 to a maximum of 541 signatures of eligible Town of Sahuarita voters. 

NOMINATION PETITION FILING PERIOD

The nomination petition filing period begins at 8 AM on Monday, March 7, 2022, and ends at 5 PM on, Monday, April 4, 2022.  Candidates must file their nomination petitions and other nomination forms with the Town Clerk’s office by 5:00 p.m., Monday, April 4, 2022, to have their name appear on the Primary Election ballot. 

The following nomination forms must be filed during the nomination filing period;

  • Nomination petitions containing at least 271 valid signatures
  • Nomination Paper including Declaration of Qualification
  • Financial Disclosure Statement

Candidate Committee FORMATION

A candidate is required to register a committee if the candidate receives contributions or makes expenditures, in any combination, of at least $500 in connection with that candidacy.

WRITE-IN CANDIDATES

A write-in candidate is not required to file nomination petitions; however, a write-in candidate must file all other candidate election forms. To qualify as a write-in candidate, a Nomination Paper/Declaration of Qualification, and Financial Disclosure Statement must be filed with the Town Clerk’s Office by 5:00 p.m., June 23, 2022 (forty (40) days prior to the Primary Election). Any person seeking to run as a write-in candidate who does not file a timely nomination paper shall not be counted in the tally of ballots.


Political Signs

Campaigns wishing to use political signs within the boundaries of the Town of Sahuarita must comply with A.R.S.§ 16-1019 and Sahuarita Town Code Sections 18.79.010 and 18.79.020. Planning and Zoning Division staff are available to review sign locations to assure compliance with town code. Please call (520) 822-8855.

A.R.S. §40-360.21-.31 requires all underground utilities to be located and marked before any type of "excavation" - this includes the installation of campaign signs on public or private property. Please contact Arizona 811 at least two working days before the installation of signs.

e-qual

The Town of Sahuarita is using the Arizona Secretary of State's E-QUAL system to enable candidates to collect nomination petition signatures online.  Interested candidates may create an online account and create a nomination petition at https://apps.azsos.gov/apps/election/eps/Portal/.  Please follow the instructions found in the "E-QUAL CANDIDATE GUIDE" (PDF).
