[ARCHIVED] Sahuarita Road Construction Update – Tuesday 07/09/13

In May 2012 construction activities started for the Sahuarita Road Phase II project, specifically Project Segments 2A and 2B .

Last week, within the Segment 2A Project, crews prepared the eastbound lanes between La Villita Road and the new Nogales Highway, as well as the new westbound lanes between the Santa Cruz River and the new Nogales Highway, for final rubberized-asphalt paving. On Monday and Tuesday of this week (July 8 - July 9), crews are installing the final pavement in the above mentioned areas. Drivers should anticipate minor delays and lane shifts during the paving operations and should be aware of all traffic control devices/signage and all speed limit reductions, as large equipment will be working adjacent to the travel lanes.

Paving during the summer months help the Town minimize impacts to traffic as the daily vehicle volumes in the area are reduced while the local schools are on summer break. The Town thanks the traveling public for their patience and understanding during the minor delays that may result from the paving efforts along Sahuarita Road.

Upon completion of the paving efforts, all Sahuarita Road traffic, between La Villita Road and the realigned Nogales Highway, will remain on the new eastbound lanes (and onto the new bridge at the Santa Cruz River). This traffic shift is allowing the construction of the future westbound lanes and the westbound bridge across the Santa Cruz River (see map). Speed limits will be reduced in the vicinity of traffic shift for the safety of the workers and traveling public.

The Segment 2B project – Nogales Highway Realignment – is approximately two-miles in length, roughly one-mile North and one-mile South of Sahuarita Road. Crews are working to complete a new railroad crossing signal as well as a new traffic signal at the new intersection of Sahuarita Road. Lane striping along the new Nogales Highway realignment will be installed during the months of July and August. At the project match-points of existing Nogales Highway, traffic speed limits remain reduced for the safety of the workers and traveling public.

As part of the ongoing construction efforts, drivers should be aware of all traffic control devices/signage and all speed limit reductions, as large equipment may be working near the roadways.

A summary of the anticipated short-term (2-3 week) construction activities can be seen in the July 02, 2013 Look Ahead Schedule
