The Sahuarita Police Department has received $64,919 in grant funding from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) to support traffic safety and DUI enforcement efforts in 2025–2026.

Over the past 12 months, Sahuarita officers have made 66 arrests for impaired driving/DUI offenses. The new funding will help the department expand education, enforcement, and outreach focused on preventing impaired driving and other dangerous behaviors on local roadways.

The grants include:

  • DUI/Impaired Driving Grant – $25,000
Supports impaired driver/DUI alcohol education, enforcement, and investigations. Funding will be used for DUI Task Force participation, DUI checkpoints, and saturation patrols within the community.

  • Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Grant – $15,000
Funds enforcement and education related to traffic laws that protect pedestrians and bicyclists, including focused efforts in school zones and at large community events.

  • Occupant Protection Program – $5,000
Supports enforcement and education around the use of child safety seats. The Sahuarita Police Department has staff certified as National Child Passenger Safety Technicians who can assist families with proper installation.

  • Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) – $19,919
Targets enforcement of traffic laws related to aggressive driving, speeding, racing, and red light running, and provides for the purchase of two new LIDAR devices. The department will also focus on increasing public awareness about the dangers of speed to help reduce and prevent vehicle collisions.

Through this partnership with the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, the Sahuarita Police Department is furthering its commitment to keeping Sahuarita’s roads safe for everyone who lives, works, and travels in our community.
