The Sahuarita Police Department issues Carry Concealed Weapon (CCW) identification cards to honorably retired local, state, and/or federal qualifying law enforcement officers who live within the SPD jurisdiction in accordance with the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA). On occasion, and not when in conflict with another jurisdiction, the Chief of Police may issue a LEOSA CCW identification card to a non Sahuarita resident who is an honorably retired local, state, and/or federal qualifying law enforcement officer.
Applicants will need to follow the below steps.
- You must first send a request to spdccw@sahuaritaaz.gov to receive a fillable SPD LEOSA CCW application
- Along with the completed SPD LEOSA CCW application, you will need to send a copy of your most recent LEOSA CCW (if applicable).
- Firearms qualification is an annual requirement for your LEOSA CCW identification card to be valid. The SPD will provide an opportunity for a LEOSA retiree to qualify once a year, typically in January or February. If your firearms qualification is completed with the SPD, the qualification must be verified by the SPD firearms instructor who supervised your qualification. The SPD LEOSA qualification course is designed to certify basic retiree law enforcement marksmanship. While, the course of fire requires safe drawing, holstering, and safe handling of a handgun, it does not involve reloading exercises nor police firearms combat tactics.
- If the LEOSA retiree has qualified with another law enforcement agency, and is requesting the SPD honor that firearms qualification in order to receive an SPD LEOSA CCW identification card, they will need to provide a verifiable document, that includes the agency's name, along with the date and time they successfully qualified with their firearm(s). Once the firearms qualification has been verified, an SPD LEOSA CCW identification card may be issued according to the qualification date.
- Anyone requesting a LEOSA CCW identification card will be required to provide proof that they are a honorably retired LEOSA qualifying local, state, and/or federal law enforcement officer.
