[ARCHIVED] Public Safety regarding Fireworks for the 4th of July Holiday

The Sahuarita Police Department is offering the following information in an effort to raise awareness regarding laws and dangers pertaining to fireworks during this year’s Independence Day celebrations.

Remember, even though the state statute now allows the use of permissible fireworks in Arizona, they may be handled or used only by persons 16 years of age or older. Permissible fireworks are designed to be handheld or to remain on or near the ground. Aerial fireworks are still prohibited. A flyer has been provided for more information.

  • In 2010, hospitals in the United States treated 8,600 patients for fireworks related injuries.
73 % of those injuries occurred between June 18th– July 18th.
  • Children should never play with fireworks. Always have adults supervising teenagers using fireworks.
  • Sparklers can reach 1,800° Fahrenheit - hot enough to melt gold.
  • Don't allow kids to pick up pieces of fireworks after an event. Some may still be ignited and can explode at any time. Do not re-light a firework that does not ignite in the first place.
  • Never throw or point fireworks at someone.
  • Many pets can be frightened by flashes of light and loud noises like fireworks and firecrackers. Please limit their exposure to these events.
  • Contact Animal Control for lost or found pets. 520-243-5900

The best way to protect your family and pets is not to use any fireworks at home. Attend public fireworks displays and leave the lighting to the professionals. In conjunction with the Town of Sahuarita, Desert Diamond Casino will host the 3rd Annual Backyard BBQ on Pima Mine Rd. Fireworks will begin after sunset between 8:30 PM and 8:45 PM.

Sahuarita Police will have an increased police presence during the July 4th holiday to enforce and educate about the state laws and city ordinances concerning fireworks. Many fireworks are potentially fatal and even sparklers can cause serious burns.

Parents should know that they could be held responsible for their children’s involvement in illegal firework activity.
